Keeping Secrets

30”x30”
oil on canvas

As the guilty hawk flees
feathers fall from the sky
far too gracefully
after such violence.

He is keeping secrets.

From her ravaged nest
a crow screams in threes
her useless pleas.

Stop stop stop!
Not the babies!
Stop stop stop!
Not the babies!

I’m floating on water
looking up at the trees
my heart even floats
and it occurs to me
I have witnessed
a tragedy.

Stop stop stop!
Not you and me!
Stop stop stop !
Not you and me!

I am keeping secrets.

Under the water
dive down deep
you can’t hear the screams,
you can’t hear the pleas.
Sun slices through silence
a searchlight beam
finds a lost dream.
